Salone Italiano

A hundred years ago, in the legendary mining towns of Silverton and Durango, racial tensions among American immigrants had reached a fever pitch. Salone Italiano is a lavish account of one Italian family’s struggles, passions, and adventures as outsiders in a strange new land. Old world customs and traditions collide with the family’s newfound American lifestyle when romances begin to flourish between immigrants of different regions and classes. And certain individuals are willing to resort to violence, including murder, in order to keep the lovers from crossing the line into segregated territory.

Salone Italiano

As Blair Street was Silverton’s red light district, dotted with many saloons and brothels, it was marked as being established mostly by Italian immigrants. Twelfth Street was the dividing line between those from the Piemonte region and those from the Tyrol.

The Belleview Saloon and Boarding House

Katie stood in the kitchen laboring over the scorching hot, woodburning range, where pots simmered and the aroma of fresh bread permeated the back area of the saloon. She pushed back a lock of hair from her face, exposing beads of sweat forming at her temples as she worked to prepare supper. Nte ch’a l’é tua surela?” “Where is your sister?” Louis bellowed as entered the kitchen, grabbing nineteen- year-old Katie by the shoulders and shouting in her face.
